Welcome to Postcards from New Mexico! Three Sundays a month, I share beauty, stories, and culture from this region that has been my home since 2008. Please consider a paid subscription and enjoy these benefits:
A genuine snail-mail postcard from New Mexico!
Access to the “If you go/Local’s Tip” section of certain posts, where you’ll find valuable information to enhance your next journey to Northern New Mexico.
In acknowledgement of living on un-ceded Tewa lands, a portion of your paid subscription will support Native-led nonprofits doing good work in this region.
Another fun music postcard today!
Last week’s postcard was all about chile. Today please enjoy Carlos Medina Conjunto playing "Chile Verde Chile Rojo" — which you may remember as the official state question. If you look carefully, you’ll see the group is playing in a number of beloved Santa Fe restaurants. If you’re familiar with the dining scene here and you recognize them, drop them in the comments!
This comes from a lovely series of music video New Mexico postcards from AMP Concerts, grateful to them for sharing these.
From AMP’s website:
Singer, songwriter, comedian and actor Carlos Medina was born in Las Vegas, NM. Carlos performs throughout the Southwest with his acoustic trio, 4-piece conjunto and Mariachi. His one-man comedy show featuring his alter ego, Graviel de La Plaga, entertains his fans during the music breaks.
Most of Medina's repertoire consists of original music based on life experience. Medina's comedy is based on his life, growing up in Northern New Mexico with his aunty gramma Lola and his cousin brother DonnaMick.
Wish you were here!
Reminds me of my first night in Santa Fe. I had arrived in my motorhome with no car to drive, and walked from the RV park to the closest restaurant to get something to eat.
WHAT AN EXPERIENCE! You might call it a baptism. It was certainly a full immersion.
My Substack post telling that story will drop in three weeks.
Maia, your postcards are so lovely. Thank you for sharing your corner of the world with us.
